Popular teacher George Clack will examine whether good movies have the same ingredients as good books.

The Residences at Vantage Point Arts & Culture Collective presents “Novels into Film” featuring popular Howard Community College teacher of literature and film, George Clack, on Tuesday, July 30, from 7-8 p.m., in the auditorium of the retirement community in Downtown Columbia. The public is invited to attend.

From The Great Gatsby to Great Expectations, the plots and characters of famous novels have proved irresistible to filmmakers. Some have taken considerable liberties in creating the movie version; others have tried to be faithful to the style and themes of the novel.

In his lecture/ discussion, Clack will consider whether the ingredients that make for a good movie are the same as those for a good book, look at how the business models for film and publishing differ, and examine the pitfalls of screen adaptations.

Clack, a lifelong film buff, taught American literature at the University of Rochester and at the SUNY College at Geneseo, in addition to current appointments at HCC and the Johns Hopkins Osher Program. He has an MA in English from the Claremont Graduate School in California.

The Arts & Culture Collective is presenting a series of programs at the Residences at Vantage Point, as well as excursions to arts and cultural events taking place elsewhere in the community, to highlight Columbia as the “campus” for residents of the retirement community. Partnerships with local institutions have made the series possible.

There is no admission fee for the program, but reservations are required at stewartk@vantagehouse.org.

Residences at Vantage Point was founded in 1990 and is a nonprofit serving people age 60 and above. Managed by Life Care Services, the community includes a variety of residential living arrangements and provides long-term health services exclusively for residents should they need them. Residences at Vantage Point is located at 5400 Vantage Point Road in Downtown Columbia.
