We are proud to announce that shot put gold medalist David Vasholz has once again brought home a first place finish! Competing in the Men’s 80+ shot put at the Maryland Senior Olympics, Mr. Vasholz earned gold with an impressive 8.44-meter throw. As a matter of fact, this marks his third consecutive win in the event, held annually in June at Howard County Community College.
The Maryland Senior Olympics celebrate athletes aged 50+, offering more than 100 events across 25 sports. This year’s Track & Field competition showcased remarkable strength and spirit—including from Vantage Point’s own David Vasholz.
Shot Put Gold Medalist Stays Strong Through the Years
This shot put gold medalist has not only stayed active—he has also exceeded expectations. “I have enjoyed throwing the shot put in high school and college,” Mr. Vasholz shared. “The high point of my career is breaking the Valparaiso University shot put record held by the great left guard of the Green Bay Packers, Fuzzy Thurston.”
In due time, Mr. Vasholz returned to the sport through the Maryland Senior Olympics. Last year, he won gold with an 8.35-meter throw. Furthermore, this year, he beat his own record, reaching 8.44 meters. His secret? “Vantage Point offers great gym facilities that help keep me in shape.”

Because Mr. Vasholz trains regularly in our on-site fitness center, he stays strong and focused year-round. Not surprisingly, many residents cheer him on, knowing he represents Vantage Point’s spirit of wellness and achievement. In short, as a dedicated shot put gold medalist, he brings pride to our entire community.
“It’s inspiring to see David compete,” one team member shared. “His energy and commitment reflect our entire community’s approach to healthy aging.”
A Legacy in Motion
In conclusion, from college glory to a gold medal comeback, David Vasholz continues to inspire. He proves that passion doesn’t fade with age—and neither does potential. As he says, “I can’t resist making an annual appearance in the shot put circle.”
We congratulate Mr. Vasholz on his win and thank him for showing us what dedication, discipline and a little friendly competition can achieve. To learn more about the Maryland Senior Olympics, visit mdseniorolympics.org.
